Our client company, VEXAR, needed to build a working opioid control intake device based on a prototype. Computools offered a comprehensive solution with critical features such as cartridge security, small screen integration and fingerprint access. Our team proactively designed and implemented these features, ensuring regulatory compliance and improving safety and adherence.
VEXAR is a pioneering healthcare company specialising in smart, dose-controlled prescription medication systems. Their innovative approach connects the entire drug supply chain, enhancing safety, compliance, and prescription adherence. VEXAR operates in a highly regulated industry and has recently been recognised for its cutting-edge technology in healthcare solutions.
The client built and tested the prototype on the board, confirming its functionality. The next step was to bring the project to the DFM ( Design for Manufacturing) stage, which required rapid realisation. However, to do this, they needed to raise funding to organise clinical trials and plan the further development of the project.
Our team built version 1.0 from an existing prototype. The features it included:
Additionally, Computools managed the entire development process from ideation to production readiness, including documentation.
VEXAR received a fully functional, reliable and safe medication intake control system. It is user-friendly for both patients and healthcare professionals.
VEXAR considered several vendors but chose Computools due to its extensive experience in creating safe and reliable medical devices. Computools’ ISO 13485-certified risk management approach ensured that VEXAR’s system would meet all regulatory requirements. This was a decisive factor for the company.
Computools engineers worked closely with the VEXAR team to define and implement the required features.
VEXAR was developing a new medication intake control system that had to be safe, secure, and easy to use. The system also had to be tamper-proof and protected against unauthorised access to prevent the theft or spoilage of medicines.
VEXAR conducted market research and selected Computools as a partner to develop their system.
Computools experts developed the system software using an ISO 13485-certified risk management approach.
Computools proposed customised solutions to enhance device performance and user experience. By partnering with Computools, VEXAR has created a safe, reliable, user-friendly drug delivery system.
Design played a crucial role in optimising the user experience and functionality of VEXAR.

Java
We chose Java as our primary programming language due to its robustness, platform independence, and extensive ecosystem of libraries and tools. Java's scalability and versatility made it ideal for building a complex healthcare solution.
Spring Boot
We leveraged Spring Boot for its rapid application development capabilities and built-in features for dependency injection, configuration, and monitoring. Spring Boot simplified the development process, allowing us to focus more on implementing business logic and less on boilerplate code. Its modular design also facilitated easy integration with other frameworks and technologies, enhancing the system's flexibility and maintainability.
Hibernate
To manage database interactions efficiently, we integrated Hibernate as the ORM (Object-Relational Mapping) framework. Hibernate abstracted the complexities of SQL database operations, providing a high-level API for data persistence. Using Hibernate, we ensured data integrity and consistency while minimising the risk of SQL injection attacks and other security vulnerabilities.
Apache Camel
We employed Apache Camel, an open-source integration framework, for seamless integration with external systems and services. Apache Camel offered a rich set of components and patterns for routing, transforming, and mediating messages. With Apache Camel, we could easily connect VEXAR's medication delivery system with external APIs, databases, and messaging systems, enabling smooth data exchange and interoperability.
We adopted the Agile Scrum methodology to effectively manage the project and ensure the timely delivery of high-quality results. Agile Scrum provides a flexible and adaptive approach to project management, allowing us to respond quickly to changing requirements and priorities.
Computools was selected through an RFP process. They were shortlisted and selected from between 5 other suppliers. Computools has worked thoroughly and timely to solve all security issues and launch as agreed. Their expertise is impressive.
